POST 05: UNIVERSAL DESIGN

Universal design in Architecture and in Interior Design is now a standard expectation. But it hasn’t always been the case. Indeed, features like a steep and narrow staircase or any kind of inaccessible design feature for the disabled was a barrier of oppportunity of those who could not go because of their disabilities. What is great now with the design philosophy is that we want to produce a design that is for every and that means making it accessible to everyone. However, in that design process we need to consciously think how can I treat everyone the same. Therefore Universal design is being used but it should also meet a beaut standard that will make everyone enjoy the experience.

One thing that I have learned through my research on design for healthcare is that there are several strategies that we can do in the design of the room that can improve the patient's help and help that person recover. For example, we can reduce the patient's stress by having a single-bed patient room, having a window that views on nature or by hiding from the patient's view unappealing elements such as trash cans, soiled linen, sharps container, etc.. Of course there are more strategies to improve the patient's health as well as his or her satisfaction such as the presence of the clock in the room or access to music (with choice and volume control).

POST 03: Why? by Simon Sinek

Simon Sinek's speech was very interesting and inspiring as everyone of us can learn from it and use it in every aspect of our life. He teaches us about what he calls the " Golden circle" which first start with "what", then "how", and finishes with "why". Most of us know what to do and how to do it, but to distinguish ourselves from others and achieve more in life, it would be great to find a purpose in life that would respond to: " Why do we do, what we do?" For interior designers, while designing, we need to come up with a design that responds to "why we have come up with this design and why it is the better option?" There needs to be purpose and meaning behind the design.
